Switching from a Graduate Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa: When, How and What Happens Next
For international graduates, the UK Graduate Visa provides time to gain valuable work experience after completing their degree.
It enables graduates to work in most jobs, change employers freely and explore career opportunities without requiring employer sponsorship.
However, for those who want to build a long-term career in the UK, the Graduate visa is often only the first step. Since it is a temporary immigration route and cannot be extended indefinitely, many graduates eventually switch to a Skilled Worker visa once they secure an eligible sponsored role.
Understanding when to make this move, how the switching process works and what steps to take can help ensure a smooth transition.
When should you switch from a Graduate Visa?
A Graduate Visa is designed as a temporary post-study route. It gives graduates permission to stay and work in the UK for at least 18 months after successfully completing an eligible course, but it does not provide an indefinite right to remain.
While working with a Graduate Visa, if you receive a qualifying job offer from a UK employer that is licensed to sponsor overseas workers, you may wish to switch to a Skilled Worker Visa before your Graduate Visa expires.
Many graduates choose to switch because the Skilled Worker route allows them to continue working in sponsored employment beyond the duration of their Graduate visa, provided they continue to meet the visa requirements.
Additionally, time spent on a Skilled Worker Visa may also count towards settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), whereas time spent on the Graduate route does not.
Note: You do not have to wait until your Graduate Visa expires. If you become eligible earlier, you can submit your Skilled Worker application at any point while your Graduate Visa remains valid. However, your application must be made before your Graduate visa expires.
Are you eligible to switch?
According to UKVI guidance, you can apply to switch to a Skilled Worker Visa from within the UK if you satisfy the Skilled Worker eligibility requirements.
This means you must have:
- A job offer from a UK employer that holds a valid Sponsor Licence
- A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by your employer
- A role that meets the Skilled Worker eligibility requirements
- The required level of English language ability
Unlike other immigration categories, Graduate Visa holders are generally permitted to switch to the Skilled Worker route from inside the UK, provided they continue to meet the relevant immigration requirements.
The process of switching visas
The switching process begins with your employer.
Before you can apply, your employer must hold a valid Sponsor Licence and assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship for your role. The certificate contains important information about your job, salary and sponsor, which the Home Office uses to assess your application.
Once you have received your CoS, you can submit an online application to switch to a Skilled Worker Visa.
As part of the application process, you will need to prove your identity. Depending on your circumstances, this may involve using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attending a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) appointment to provide your biometric information. The Home Office will advise which process applies to you when you submit your application.
After submitting your application, you should remain in the UK while the Home Office considers your case.
Official guidelines state that you must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before a decision is made. Leaving the Common Travel Area before receiving a decision will result in your application being considered withdrawn.
The Home Office advises that decisions on applications made within the UK are usually provided within eight weeks, although some applications may take longer if additional checks are required.
What happens once your visa is granted?
Once your Skilled Worker Visa is approved, your immigration status changes from the Graduate route to the Skilled Worker route.
From that point onwards, your permission to work is linked to the sponsored role described in your CoS. Unlike the Graduate visa, which offers broad flexibility to work for different employers, the Skilled Worker route is based on sponsorship by a licensed employer.
If, in the future, you want to change employers or move into a different eligible role, you may need to apply to update your Skilled Worker Visa before starting the new position. In most cases, your new employer will also need to issue a fresh CoS.
What about your family?
If your partner or children already hold dependent visas linked to your Graduate visa, their immigration status does not automatically change when you switch to a Skilled Worker visa.
They must also submit their own applications if they wish to switch to your dependents under the Skilled Worker route. They can apply at the same time as you or before their existing visas expire.
Conclusion
Switching from a Graduate Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa is often an important milestone for international graduates who wish to establish a longer-term career in the UK.
The key is not to leave the process until the last minute. Ensure your employer is licensed to sponsor workers, confirm that your role satisfies the Skilled Worker requirements and submit your application before your Graduate visa expires.
By understanding the process and following UKVI guidance carefully, graduates can move smoothly from temporary post-study permission to a sponsored work route that supports continued employment and, for many applicants, a pathway towards long-term residence in the UK.
