Switching jobs in the UK while holding a Skilled Worker visa requires more than accepting a new employment offer. If you move to a different employer, you will generally need a new Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) and must apply to update your visa before starting the new sponsored job.

The same requirement can apply when you remain with your current employer but move into a different occupation code.

Understanding the process helps you plan your resignation, notice period and start date without jeopardising your immigration status.

Do you need to update your Skilled Worker Visa?

Your next steps depend on whether you are changing employers or changing roles within your existing organisation.

Do you need to update your Skilled Worker Visa?

SituationWhat you normally do
Moving to a new employerObtain a new CoS and apply to update your visa
Changing roles with the same employerApply if your new duties require a different occupation code or another change-of-employment rule applies
Receiving a promotionCheck whether your core duties, occupation code and salary change. A promotion does not automatically require a new application
Taking additional workCheck whether your existing visa conditions permit the work or whether a separate application is required

The Home Office's change-of-employment guidance explains when an application is necessary.

Confirm your new employer and CoS.

Before resigning, confirm that your prospective employer holds a valid Home Office sponsor licence and is authorised to sponsor the proposed role under the Skilled Worker route. That includes: your new employer assigning you a new CoS containing details of your employment, such as your job, occupation code, salary, and proposed start date. A CoS is an electronic record, not a physical certificate or a visa in itself.

Note: Check that the information in the CoS accurately reflects the position you have been offered. An incorrect occupation code, salary, or job description could create problems with your application.

You should also confirm that the role meets the applicable Skilled Worker eligibility requirements. These include the relevant skill level, salary threshold and going rate, subject to any applicable exceptions or transitional provisions.

Update your visa before starting the new job.

Once your new employer has assigned the CoS, you can apply online to update your Skilled Worker Visa. Generally, you can apply up to three months before the proposed start date recorded on your CoS.

Your application must be submitted while your existing permission remains valid if you intend to rely on the rules allowing you to continue working during the decision period.

You will need to prove your identity and provide the supporting documents requested by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a biometric appointment.

Do not assume that your existing visa automatically authorises employment with your new sponsor. You must wait until your new immigration permission has been granted before starting the new sponsored job.

Application fees?

Changing employers can involve a new visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, where applicable. The amount depends on factors such as the length of permission requested and whether a reduced fee applies to your circumstances.

The 3For example, GOV.UK currently lists standard in-country Skilled Worker update fees of £943 for permission for up to three years and £1,865 for more than 3 years. These figures should be verified before publication or payment, as fees can change.

Your employer should also clarify which sponsorship-related costs it will cover. Consult the official Skilled Worker visa fees guidance for the applicable charges.

What happens to your dependants?

Changing employers does not necessarily mean that your partner and children must immediately submit new applications. Their existing immigration permission and expiry dates are important, but you should not assume that their status will automatically remain suitable in every situation.

Check the rules applicable to your circumstances and whether your dependants need to apply separately when your own permission changes or expires. Dependants who need to update their permission must satisfy the relevant requirements and pay any applicable fees.

The official partner and children guidance explains the application process.

FAQs

Do I need a new CoS to change employers?

Generally, yes. Your new sponsor must assign a CoS for the new employment before you apply to update your visa.

Can I resign before receiving my new CoS?

You may resign under your employment contract, but doing so before confirming sponsorship and application arrangements can create avoidable employment and immigration risks.

Can I start my new job while waiting for a decision?

No. You must receive confirmation of your new immigration permission before starting the new sponsored job.

Does a promotion require a new visa application?

Not automatically. It depends on the new role, its duties, occupation code and the applicable immigration rules.

How long does the application take?

An in-country Skilled Worker update application usually takes around eight weeks, although delays are possible and faster services may be available.

Will changing employers affect my settlement plans?

A job change does not automatically prevent you from qualifying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). However, you should retain employment, sponsorship, salary and immigration records and check that you continue to meet the applicable settlement requirements.

Conclusion

Changing jobs on a Skilled Worker visa is manageable when the process is planned carefully. Confirm the new sponsor, obtain the correct CoS, check the role and salary, submit your application and wait for approval before starting the new position.
