Starting April 9, 2025, the UKVI will implement significant changes to immigration and visa application fees. These changes affect various visa categories, including work visas like the Skilled Worker Visa, family and settlement visas like Indefinite Leave to Remain, and student visas. These increases reflect the government’s ongoing adjustments to its immigration policies and the cost of processing applications.
This article will explore key changes across different visa categories, focusing on the Skilled Worker Visa, Sponsor Licenses, Certificate of Sponsorship, Indefinite Leave to Remain, Student Visas, and Naturalisation processes. We will also discuss how these changes could impact both individuals and employers seeking to navigate the UK’s immigration system.
1. Skilled Worker Visa
The Skilled Worker Visa, a central part of the UK's post-Brexit immigration system, allows qualified individuals to come to the UK for work in a specific occupation. As of April 9, 2025, the application fee for this visa will see an increase. For applicants with a certificate of sponsorship for three years or less, the fee will rise from £719 to £769, a £50 increase. For those sponsored for over three years, the fee will increase from £1,420 to £1,519, an increase of £99.
There are also specific changes for jobs listed on the Immigration Salary List. The fee for both three-year or less and over three-year sponsorships will rise by £39 and £76. This aligns with the broader trend across various visa categories, where additional costs are being levied to help cover administrative and processing expenses.
2. Sponsor Licenses and Certificate of Sponsorship
The costs associated with sponsoring foreign workers are also set to increase. A Worker Sponsor License for large sponsors will rise from £1,476 to £1,579, reflecting an increase of £103. Small sponsors will see their fees increase from £536 to £574, which is a £38 rise.
The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), which employers must provide to workers applying for a Skilled Worker Visa, will experience notable increases. the CoS fee will rise from £239 to £525—an increase of £286. Similarly, the CoS fee for temporary workers, including those in the Global Business Mobility – Graduate Trainee, UK Expansion Worker, and Secondment Worker routes, will increase from £25 to £55.
These increases are designed to cover the administrative and processing costs incurred by the Home Office when issuing sponsorship licenses and certificates. Employers seeking to bring foreign talent to the UK should prepare for these additional expenses, especially for large-scale sponsorship schemes.
3. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), also known as permanent residency, is a crucial step for foreign nationals wishing to settle in the UK permanently. As of April 9, 2025, the application fee for ILR will increase from £2,885 to £3,029, a £144 rise. This fee applies to the main applicants and their dependents.
ILR applicants will need to meet specific eligibility criteria, including residence requirements and knowledge of English and life in the UK. The increase in fees is part of the overall strategy to balance immigration costs and the resources required to process these applications.
4. Student Visas
The Student Visa category, essential for foreign nationals wishing to study in the UK, will also see a fee increase. From April 9, 2025, the fee for both the main applicant and their dependents will rise from £490 to £524, an increase of £34. This applies to the standard Student Visa as well as the Child Student Visa, which is required for children wishing to study in the UK.
Additionally, the fee for short-term student visas for those studying English language courses of more than six months but not exceeding eleven months will increase from £200 to £214. This fee increase is aimed at addressing the rising administrative costs of managing visa applications for international students, a key sector for the UK economy.
5. Naturalisation
Naturalisation is the process by which foreign nationals can acquire British citizenship. This process is crucial for individuals wishing to become full members of British society. From April 9, 2025, the application fee for naturalisation will rise from £1,500 to £1,605, a £105 increase. The fee for British overseas territory citizens seeking naturalisation will increase from £1,000 to £1,070, reflecting a £70 rise.
It’s also important to note that fees for nationality registration as a British citizen will increase as well. The fee for adult nationality registration will increase from £1,351 to £1,446, while the fee for child nationality registration will remain the same at £1,214.
6. Other Important Fee Changes
Several other visa categories and services will experience fee changes, including those for family reunification, temporary workers, and those applying under specific routes such as the Global Talent Visa and Endorsement Fee for Innovator Founders. Employers and potential applicants should carefully review these changes to understand how they could impact their applications and budgets.
One significant fee change is for the Priority Visa Services, which remain unchanged at £500 for settlement and non-settlement visas. However, the Super Priority Visa Service, which offers faster processing, will continue to cost £1,000, with no increase.
The UK’s immigration system is undergoing significant fee increases in 2025, affecting various visa categories, including those for work, study, family reunification, and settlement. Applicants, particularly those applying for the Skilled Worker Visa, Sponsor Licenses, Indefinite Leave to Remain, and Naturalisation, should prepare for higher costs.
It is important for both individual applicants and businesses to budget for these increases and seek professional advice if necessary to navigate the complexities of the UK immigration process. Additionally, it is advisable to stay updated on further changes to ensure compliance with the latest immigration policies and regulations. With the changes set to take effect soon, planning ahead will be key to ensuring a smooth application process.
